A handheld refractometer is an indispensable measurement device when precise values are required for water, sugar or salt content. Whether in food control, beverage production, beekeeping or in the laboratory – correct calibration is the basis for precise analyses and high measurement quality.
Regular calibration: Temperature changes, wear and tear or environmental influences can affect the accuracy of a handheld refractometer. Regular calibration detects such deviations at an early stage and ensures that the device continues to work precisely. A well-calibrated refractometer provides consistent results and prevents measurement errors that can be caused by external factors.

Brix measurement provides precise quality parameters along the entire process chain – from plant growth to the final product and quality assurance.
- Plant vitality: For analyzing plant vitality and the degree of maturity. A high Brix value in the sap indicates a strong photosynthetic capacity, high mineral density and resistant crops.
- Ripeness control & harvest planning: Farmers use the Brix measurement to determine the optimal sugar content of fruit. This allows the ideal time for harvesting to be planned precisely.
- Food industry & product monitoring: Brix measurement is used in the food industry to monitor sweetness and product quality. Examples: Juices, soft drinks, jams, preserves, honey. Compliance with defined quality standards is guaranteed.

Temperature compensation
A KRÜSS Optronic handheld refractometer with automatic temperature compensation (ATC) provides exact measured values at all times, without the need for time-consuming tempering of the sample or complex conversions.
- In handheld refractometers, a bimetal strip is used for automatic temperature compensation. The user looks through the handheld refractometer and sees the temperature-compensated value directly through the adjustment, without a conversion table
- The result: stable, comparable and standard-compliant Brix values, even if the sample temperature is between 10 °C and 30 °C
