Analog measurement refractive index and %Brix: resolution (0.0005 nD); measurement range (nD1.3000-1.7200)
Cost-effective transmitted light Abbe refractometer
The AR4 is a classic, analog Abbe refractometer. The measurement device offers an inexpensive solution for determining the refractive index using the classic transmitted light method. It is also suitable for measuring solutions, fats and oils of all kinds. It is popular in practice because it is easy to clean, even with oily samples.
The scales can be set manually using the drive knob and the refractive index and Brix values are read off using an eyepiece. The temperature is measured with the integrated digital thermometer and displayed on the LCD. The AR4 refractometer can be connected to a circulation thermostat for temperature control.
This device can be used in a wide range of applications: for identity checking, purity control and concentration determination of raw materials, semi-finished products and end products or for determining the sugar concentration as well as for incoming and outgoing goods inspection. It has also proven itself in use in hospital laboratories, training and pharmacies.

Abbe refractometer – Temperature control with the circulation thermostat
Absolutely independent of the ambient temperatures, accurate and reproducible measurements can be achieved with circulation thermostats in the Abbe refractometer.
The PT31 circulation thermostat is small and very easy to connect.

More InformationApplication Abbe refractometer
The AR4 makes a clear statement as a basic appliance: The temperature is displayed digitally – without the need for a rising thermometer. This not only eliminates the tedious reading of an analog column, but also the typical sources of error that can occur with classic thermometers. The technically superior T-measurement of the Abbe refractometer ensures stable, reproducible results and clearly sets the AR4 apart from the competition.
Application example: Schools and educational institutions
- Application: Ideal for lessons, teaching and laboratory exercises. For example, demonstration of transmitted light methods for formulation work and simple quality checks.
- Quick measurement and determination of sugar concentration (jams, honey, syrup, seasoning sauces, mustard, mayonnaise)
- Advantage: easy handling, easy cleaning, the digital temperature display enables clear, error-free readings
Application example hospitals and pharmacies
- Valid norms/standards: Pharmacopoeias (BP,JP, Ph. Eur.), GLP
- Application: Outgoing goods inspection or analysis of raw materials. Control of drugs according to Pharmacopoeia (infusion solutions, blood serums, pills, pastes, dialysis preparations) or analysis of body secretions
- Advantage: High reliability with simple operation, availability of the BRIX scale, possibility of temperature compensation

Cleaning tips
- Thorough and regular cleaning of the Abbe refractometer ensures that measurements remain reliable and reproducible. The measurement prism is the most sensitive component and should be cleaned immediately after each analysis to prevent samples from drying out or hardening. For daily cleaning, a soft, lint-free cellulose cloth is sufficient to absorb the sample and then wipe with a slightly moistened cloth.
- Between measurements of very different samples, a control measurement with water or a suitable reference is recommended to ensure the cleaning success. This protects the Abbe refractometer in the long term and delivers consistently accurate results.
